JCI World President Taiwanese President Discuss World Peace
In his maiden and official visit to Taiwan, recently, the JCI 2010 World President met with Taiwan's President, Ma Ying-Jeou. Besides exploring other avenues on how to advance global security and peaceful co-existence, Kwemain and Ma talked on the support of the Taiwan government in the implementation of the UN Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, with emphasis on the JCI 2010 flagship programme, JCI Nothing But Net. This is a JCI-designed programme, whose objective is to raise funds for the distribution of 200.000 Bed Nets in Africa in collaboration with the UN Foundation.
President Ma remarked that JCI Taiwan is one of the four major community service organisations in his country.
"JCI Taiwan, which has a history dating back over 50 years, has many young and energetic members, and the organisation has played an important role in social service work over the years," Ma told reporters in a news conference.
According to Ma, JCI Taiwan embraces the organisation's philosophy of training oneself and providing service to the group.
"The organisation brings together young entrepreneurs who engage in community service activities and the members have built a strong image for themselves in Taiwan."
JCI Taiwan, the President said, is highly regarded and admired by sectors throughout Taiwan.
"JCI Taiwan is working hand-in-glove with the mother institution, JCI, in promoting understanding and friendship among people throughout the world," he noted.
President Ma commented that over 20 years ago he took part in JCI activities and at the time received a training video from the organisation's training officers on procedural process for meetings. At the time, he said, most people in Taiwan did not have a thorough understanding of procedural guidelines for formal meetings. The video provided by JCI came at a perfect time, he said, adding that he learned much from the video and that it made a contribution toward the establishment of proper meeting procedures among private groups in the country.
The Taiwanese President expressed glee that the instructional video was beneficial as it assisted everyone in understanding how to express their opinions through legitimate and proper procedures, thereby protecting their own rights. In addition, understanding these procedures is important for establishing a civil awareness, and also helps to make up for deficiencies in the educational system in the country.
President Kwemain and JCI 2010 Vice President Batbayar Ulziidelger were accompanied in the audience by the 58th President of JCI Taiwan, Andy Tu, and the 57th President of JCI Taiwan, Dennis Shen, to the Presidential Office to meet President Ma. Also in attendance was National Security Council Advisor, Mignonne M. J. Chan.
The JCI World President's visit to Taiwan was also an opportunity for him to attend ceremonies marking the inauguration of a new JCI Taiwan President.
After Taiwan, Kwemain has met with some top UN Foundation officials in New York and former Japanese Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi.
